Sydney’s Zouk Thesis

Speaking from the heart: I found Zouk two years ago in New York City and fell in love. Since then, I have traveled throughout North America, Europe, and Rio to dance and to learn, and when not traveling helped build the Zouk community in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My journey has changed me as a human being, as a dancer, and as an artist. This work is an expression of my journey in Zouk and I was beyond blessed to get to share this event with so many of the people who were a part of that journey.

Speaking from the head: I have been studying Brazilian Zouk for my Master of Fine Arts degree and recently presented a thesis performance framing Brazilian Zouk as concert dance. For the dancing before and after the performance, I brought together dancers from throughout the Midwest and Canada to show the academic community what a Brazilian Zouk party looks like. For the performance I brought together Zouk, Fusion, and solo dancers along with musicians to turn my Zouk travels into contemporary art. With Clement X Zhouk’s help, I filmed and broadcast a livestream to share a different perspective on live performance with the audience as well as with my Zouk friends all around the world. Check out the event page for more information about the performance and Zouk marathon that went along with it. Enjoy!
